I READ REVIEWS OF PEOPLE SAYING STUFF ARRIVED BROKEN, AND OTHERS WHO LOVED IT LEFT ONLY 4 STARS INSTEAD 5, SO THESE REVIEWS REALLY MADE ME HESITATE. AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A REAL SHAME FOR ME HAD I NOT ORDERED THIS BED FOR MY SON.
FIRST OFF, WHEN YOUR ITEMS ARRIVE, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS GO THROUGH THE PARTS LIST AND CHECK OUT EACH PART AND POSITION THEM NEATLY TO PREPARE BEFORE PUTTING IT TOGETHER. YOU WOULD NOTICE IF A PART WAS BROKEN BEFORE STARTING, AND IF YOU DON'T THEN PERHAPS ORDERING ON LINE AND PUTTING IT TOGETHER YOURSELF ISN'T THE THING FOR YOU.
GETTING A BROKEN PART REPLACED IS ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM, ALL YOU DO IS CALL SOUTHSHORE AT THEIR TOLLFREE NUMBER 800-290-0465 AND THEY WILL SEND OUT REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR ANYTHING YOU RECEIVE BROKEN, FREE OF CHARGE. THEY ARE GREAT.
THE PRODUCT INFORMATION SAYS IT TAKES 2 PEOPLE TO PUT THIS TOGETHER. NOT TRUE! I AM A 46 YEAR OLD LADY AND NOT IN THE BEST OF SHAPE, AND I PUT THIS TOGETHER ALL BY MYSELF WITH NO PROBLEMS. WHEN THE HEAVY PACKAGE ARRIVED ON MY FRONT PORCH, I SIMPLY TOOK A BOX CUTTER, SLICED THE BOX OPEN CAREFULLY, AND CARRIED THE PARTS INTO THE BEDROOM A FEW AT A TIME.
ANOTHER REVIEW COMPLAINED ABOUT THE DRAWERS, SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THEM NOT HOLDING ANYTHING HEAVY. WELL, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO PUT IN THEM, HEAVY BOOKS? OUR DRAWERS SLIDE OPEN FINE AND MY SON IS USING THE DRAWERS FOR SOCKS, UNDERGARMENTS, AND THE 3RD FOR LIGHT TOYS HE HAS. NO PROBLEMS.
THE ONLY BAD THING I CAN SAY IS THAT IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH WEIGHT THE BED IS DESIGNED TO HOLD. MY SON WEIGHS 120 LBS AND WILL GET BIGGER.
I SAT ON IT AND IT DIDNT FLINTCH. I JUST TOLD HIM NOT TO JUMP UP AND DOWN ON IT, I MEAN, HOW HARDY DOES A PIECE A FURNITURE HAVE TO BE? IT'S JUST COMMON SENSE, TAKE CARE OF YOUR PURCHASE AND THIS WILL BE A GREAT BED FOR YOUR KID OR TEEN.
THE THING I LIKED BEST ABOUT IT WAS THE PRICE AND THE LOOKS. I PLAN ON ADDING THE MATCHING HEADBOARD AND END TABLES IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
IT IS ALSO REALLY GREAT, IF YOU HAVE PETS SUCH AS CATS THAT GO UNDER YOUR BED AND PLAY AND MAKE NOISE, BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GO UNDER THIS BED!

(More customer reviews)the bed - Very sturdy and easy to assemble for a mail order bed. (Although it is a little tedious, there is a lot of parts due to the shelving.) I love the platform bed, but see my caveat for the headboard.
HOWEVER - Do not choose the lowest list price. I ended up paying double for shipping than I did for my gun safe which weighed about 3 times more. Before you choose which Amazon company to use, put it in cart and see what the total price is... then repeat until you find the TRUE best price.
1-5-09 update - Now that I have had it for a few weeks. The drawers are pretty useless. 2-3 are already not tracking well, as if the tracks are worn or warped. I am simply not going through the effort to disassemble to get the necessary access to fix. I am trying to find out how to drop my rating a star or two.

Maximize storage options in the bedroom with this king-sized platform storage bed. From Ready to Assemble (RTA) home furniture leader Prepac, the platform bed provides three drawers on each side of the bed for a total of six. The 20-inch deep drawers are great for stowing pajamas, socks, extra blankets and sheets, or bedtime reading materials. The bed frame is crafted out of composite wood with overlay laminate. For even weight distribution and ample support, plywood slats run vertically under the mattress, reinforced by metal braces beneath the slats. Users open drawers using the discrete finger pull located on the bottom of each drawer's front. Drawers glide smoothly on metal tracks with built-in stops for safety. While the bed frame requires the separate purchase of a standard king mattress, the platform design eliminates the need for a box spring. The platform storage bed complements Prepac's Manhattan and Regency bedroom collections, and a matching storage headboard is available for separate purchase. To clean, wipe the platform bed clean with a damp cloth, taking care not to over-wet the MDF to prevent it from disintegrating. Do not finish or varnish the bed as it already has a laminate finish. Shipped flat with foam injection packaging, the platform frame requires adult assembly. For faulty parts, consumers benefit from a one-year, free part replacement program. Prepac covers this item with a 5-year limited warranty. Assembled, the king platform bed measures 78-1/2 inches long by 81-1/2 inches wide by 18-3/4 inches high, with a 21-inch bed height with the use of an 8-inch high mattress.
